Key Verse – Luke 1:26-27 “In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary”
Once again we find God sending some unexpected and perhaps unwanted news to a normal everyday person. This time it’s Mary, by all accounts a young lady not much older than 13 or 14 and she has been anticipating her wedding. While this may seem way too young to be married to us today, this was the normal custom at the time. Mary no doubt had been planning, preparing for and even anticipating her upcoming marriage. But the angel Gabirel’s visit changes her plans suddenly and without warning. Mary’s mind must have swirled with emotions, questions and even doubts. Scripture only provides us with a small glimpse of what had to have been overwhelming news for this young girl.
Think and journal about:
- Put yourself in Mary’s shoes for a moment, describe your thoughts, feelings and questions.
- Which emotion would take over and why do you think that is?
- When was the last time you were anticipating something only to have your plans changed? How did that make you feel?
